Summer security tips: keeping your home safe

With summer around the corner, most of us are probably too preoccupied with scheduling vacations and planning for the stresses of Christmas to worry about home security solutions right now.

However the holiday season is often a major period for burglaries and break-ins, and it is worthwhile taking the time to think about how you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim.

The best offence against crime is a good defence, so with that in mind here are a few simple security tips that can help keep your property safe this summer.

A bit of gardening goes a long way

One of the best ways to deter burglars is to make your house look lived in, and you can easily do this by thinking about the way you take care of your lawn.

You will want to keep things relatively well maintained, by mowing the grass and keeping the hedges trimmed, but it can also be to your advantage to leave a bit of mess around.

By scattering a few expendable kids toys around the front yard you can make it appear as if someone is at home even if you are on vacation.

You might even want to purchase a few things from the pet store - such as chew toys and water dishes - that will give the appearance that you own a big angry guard dog.

Lock all your doors and windows
During the hot summer months, many people choose to leave windows and doors open to try and let in some fresh air and a cool breeze.

And while this is understandable, it is important to remember that thieves are often opportunists and will leap on the opportunity presented by an open window or unlocked door.
For this reason, you should always try and keep your home as secure as possible when you are going to be out for any period of time.
Ground level access points should be the priority but even second story windows and balconies may be targeted, so it is well worth your while to make sure everything is closed and locked.

Install a security system

Even if you have taken all the above precautions, unfortunately it is almost impossible to completely eliminate the risk of a break-in.

That is why home alarm systems can be such a great investment, as they ensure that should someone break into your property they won't be able to go about their business undisturbed.

By installing a home alarm system, you can create a major deterrent to thieves and vandals and help make sure that your Christmas vacation remains as relaxing and carefree as possible.

Do Wireless Alarms Need Wi-Fi?

Wireless alarm systems will not require Wi-Fi , at least not to communicate with its wireless components. The only time a wireless alarm would need Wi-Fi  is if it reports back to an app on a customer’s smartphone, to alert them of an intrusion or to allow them to arm and disarm the system remotely. For the system to properly talk with its wireless components , it would require a receiver. In some instances this receiver can be built into the main control panel, but more often than not it is a separate device that must be wired in.  This receiver uses RF frequencies to communicate with each wireless device, which will have a wireless transmitter inside.  These wireless devices have the same function as their hard wired options, for example a wireless detector is able to detect movement the same way a wired detector will.  The difference is how it transmits this signal back to the panel.  The hard wired detector creates an open circuit when it detects movement, tripping the alarm ins
