What is a Key System?

A Key system is a name given to the Phone system which accepts lines from the carrier and gives intercom stations to use on the desks.

The Key System gets its name as generally to access the lines connected to the system a User will press Keys in order to get to the lines and the stations.

These days it is hard to tell the difference between the key system and a PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) as both forms of technology can be programmed to do the same features and attributes which used to define them.

Why do i need a Key System?

Well if you have more than one line for use in your business then a Key System is for you.

The lines will connect into the Main Equipment box also known as a Customer Switching System and then Handsets will be replaced to give you access to these lines.

What is the difference between an Extension and a Station?

A station is the term in Key Systems for the Intercom Stations. An extension was the term to identify intercom extensions on a PABX.

What is a Directory Number?

A directory Number is the number you have listed in the Telephone directory for people to contact you.

What is a Rotary Group?

A Rotary Group or Hunt Group is the name given to the grouping of your incoming lines so that when your on your main number, an additional number in that group will ring so you can accept more than one call at a time.

Does the Key System do the Rotary?

No it does not, the Carrier will have to group your lines together which will normally involve a monthly cost.

Can i get Caller Identification on my Key System?

Yes with the correct harware in the system you can get caller ID on your system, however you will need to get the Carrier to enable Caller ID on each line you wish to have Caller Identification working on.

How many lines do i need?

The general ratio is 1/3 so for every 3 people you have you need at least one line.

What is PSTN?

PSTN is Public Switched Telephone Network it refers to the Analogue lines which connect from the telephone exchange to your business. A PSTN number is generally the normal for of technology most business owners will use when starting a business.

What is ISDN?

ISDN is Intergrated Services Digital Network is the digital form of communication from the Carrier. It comes in two flavours Basic Rate and Primary Rate.

Basic Rate ISDN (BRI) gives two lines for use and can offer Multiple numbers and also Direct Inward Dialling. DID requires you to purchase a block of numbers for use with your system. BRI (Basic Rate ISDN) typically comes in on copper pair of wires and will terminate onto an NTI (Network Termination Interface). BRI has a maximum of 5 x NTI units which can be grouped together.

Primary Rate ISDN (PRI) gives either 10/20/30 lines for use. It offers the same features as BRI, however it requires an Optical Fibre Cable from the exchange to your premises and an equipment box to be installed to accomodate the exchange equipment.

Whis is better PSTN or ISDN?

Well they both have there Pros and Cons.
PSTN is an analogue service therefore it could be said that the clarity and quality of the conversation is somewhat inferior than a conversation on an ISDN service.
PSTN allows for connections such as ADSL, Duet and Securetel ISDN does not
ISDN is digital and therefore secure from Eavesdropping
ISDN is digital in the event of a powerfailure ISDN will not work as standard handsets are analogue and will not accept the digital signal.
ISDN allows for Direct Inward Dialling so your customers can ring directly to your station or extension.

So the smart people will get a combination of both ISDN and PSTN so they are cover all bases.

I often get asked Graham what is the best Domestic Security Panel that is affordable, feature rich and gives value for money. Firstly on top of the budget and features is size. Is size important? Of course it is.

For a small/medium house with up to 16 Detection Devices of either wired or wireless I direct them to the Bosch 16+.

The Bosch 16+ offers more features than that which a stick can poke at it. As a standard the Panel Kit comes with the Panel of course, a Siren, a screamer, Power Supply, Battery, and an LCD Keypad.

The keypad has a temperature sensor and an optional prox card reader. The big screen is text driven and very easy to navigate around. It is available in either Black and White.
It is also a very easy panel to program which will mean less time for the installer to get it up and running.

The wireless kit allows connection of Wireless Detection Devices and also wireless remotes for Arming and Disarming.

The inbuilt SMS capability allow for alarms from the system to SMS up to two mobile phone numbers with Text messages of what is in alarm. The inbuilt mobile functionality also allows for arming and disarming via mobile phone and home automation.

There you have it the Bosch 16+ great for techies and the customer.
